Do you call in sick to work to watch or play sports?

For some, the modern work schedule is more flexible than ever, yet there are still a large number of people who call in sick because of their favorite sport. A recent study performed by Harris Associates for the The Work Force Institute at Kronos Incorporated revealed that “employees around the world have, to varying degrees, called in sick to work over a sporting event.” According to the study there are many reasons that effect the percentage of employees calling in sick for sporting events including who the home team is, what sport is playing and if the person calling in sick is actually playing the sport instead of just watching it.

Calling in sick to work because of London Olympic Games

This study makes me wonder how the Summer Olympic Games will effect the number of people calling in “sick” to work. Over 4.3 billion people tuned in to watch the Beijing Olympic Games and I think we are going to see that number grow substantially for this year’s London Olympic Games. I believe that the percentage of employees who call in sick for work because of the Olympic Games will be higher than average, due to the popularity of the Olympic Games. More people are watching the Olympics, so more employees will be calling in sick all around the world. Here’s an infographic from the study for you to enjoy.
